How it’s done…
Every cream and lotion is made
basically the same way,
so once you have made one cream,
getting creative is easy.
Before you start:
1- Decide how you are going to melt and heat the wax, oil and water.
If you are using a stove, you will need to create a bain-marie.
2- You will need a way to blend your cream.
An electric hand or stick blender makes the easiest way to blend, but a whisk or fork can be used too.
3- Have a sterilised container ready to store your final cream in.
The process:
1. Weigh out your ingredients. Use digital scales if you want to be accurate. Accuracy isn’t essential though, close enough is good enough.
2. Melt wax over a low heat, add oil/s, stir gently and set aside to cool.
Butter/s and stearic acid are also added at this stage if they are being used.
3. Warm the water. Set aside to cool.
4. After the wax/oil blend has cooled, (it should be at body temperature or 37C), slowly add the water while
blending.
The cream will quickly start to take shape and thicken. Blend for 1-2 minutes, let rest and then blend again. Keep blending and resting until your emulsion (cream) forms peaks like meringue. If you have your water and oil at the right temperature, your emulsion will take shape quickly, usually within 15minutes but if it is too hot your cream will not combine properly. Let it cool before trying to blend again.
5. Add any extra touches: Aromatherapy or fragrance oil, colour, preservatives, extra healing oils etc. Blend again for a few minutes.
6. Let mixture cool.
7. Pour into jars or bottles and let cool fully before replacing lid.
Step 1
Gather ingredients.
Step 2
Melt and heat your ingredients.
Step 3
Blend your ingredients.
It really is that simple!
Never allow your wax and oil to boil.
Heat gently and slowly. The wax and butters melt within a few minutes and over heating will not only ruin your product, it is dangerous. You can heat in a variety of ways, the stove or electric fry pan filled with water are probably the easiest.
Stove:
A double boiler, also known as a bain-marie, will be needed for melting wax and heating the oil and water. This is the same method that is used to melt chocolate.
To make a double boiler you will need two pots, one larger than the other. The larger pot is ¼ filled with water.
1. Place the ingredient to be melted, usually the wax, in the smaller pot.
2. Place the smaller pot inside the larger pot and heat gently. As the water in the larger pot simmers, the ingredient in the smaller pot will melt. Heat gently, stirring constantly and make sure it doesn’t boil.
Microwave:
I don't recommend this way as the risk of over heating is too great.
